On Monday, November 10th, at the request of concerned parents, the Board of Education approved the hiring of Wonder Makers. The environmental agency, Wonder Makers, specializes in environmental issues that can cause health problems with staff and students. Teachers were given a survey and asked to report any health issues that could possibly indicate inadequate air quality and exposure to molds and other toxins. The surveys were completed on November 24th. On Friday, December 5th, a team from Wonder Makers, the Harper Creek Board of Education, facilities' personnel, and a parent representative visited the Middle School as a part of the air quality testing plan. The visit started at 9:00 A.M. and ended at 5:00 P.M.
Susan Pinto from Wonder Makers said the visit would be a visual inspection (roof, crawl spaces, maintenance rooms, area between ceiling and roof, and classrooms). Some air testing was done. It was mostly a time to look and formulate a plan for testing. Wonder Makers was at the Middle School all day Monday, December 8th, testing air quality.
As you know the HCEA filed a grievance in October of 2013 on behalf of members who had concerns about the air quality at Harper Creek Middle School. We are hopeful that with our new leadership and active, concerned parents, this investigation will be thorough and transparent. The results of the testing will be presented at an open Board of Education meeting. The public reporting of results was recommended by Wonder Makers.
