PAC Drive Until November 23rd  (Envelopes are in the teacher's lounge in each building)

Picture
Governor Rick Snyder and the Michigan Legislature have embarked on a program to reduce public school spending, limit school employee rights and transfer business' share of paying for public education to individual tax payers.  Their agenda includes:
  • More than $1 billion cut from public education
  • New tax on pension income
  • Elimination of tax credits for seniors, middle class families and the working poor
  • Emergency managers that strip rights away from workers and citizens
  • Attacks on collective bargaining and free speech rights for workers
  • and a 1.8 billion tax break for big corporations - with no guarantee they'll create jobs!
MEA is under attack because we are one of the few organizations standing up to this assault on public education and the middle class.

By giving to MEA-PAC, you are helping stand up for kids, not CEOs.

Please give, fill out the PAC envelope and give the envelope to your building ARs (recommended contribution of $20) the $ helps MEA to ...

  • Hold lawmakers accountable for their attacks on public education and the middle class.
  • Stand up for kids, not CEOs.
  • Preserve our neighborhood schools.
  • Restore the rights of public school employees.
  • Save the middle class and restore the balance of power in Michigan.
  • Elect true friends of public education in 2012.

Bills pending that hurt your ability to serve the students of Michigan and harm your financial future would:
  • Outsource teaching services to the lowest bidder (SB618)
  • Eliminate the cap on charter schools, which would reduce funding to local schools (SB 618)
  • Expand cyber schools and allow enrollment to include students not previously enrolled in public school (SB 619)
  • Allow 51 percent of parents in a public school to petition the school board to convert their neighborhood school to a charter school (SB 621)
  • Implement vouchers/parochial by expanding dual enrollment to let private school students use state aid for college classes (SB 623)
  • Mandate all school districts participate in schools of choice (SB 624)
  • Force all future school employees into a defined contribution plan instead of the MPSERS defined benefit plan (SB 593)
